Why Dunedin Causeway is great for kitesurfing.
This Gulf Coast Kitesurfing location has a variety of shallow easy-to-ride flat water conditions. Perfect for twintip kiteboarding. It also has deeper waters if you are using a hydrofoil or want to go wing foiling. There is a lot of space to explore here. You can sail out ways and find your own private flat water spot or practice big air kiteboarding in the deeper areas.
The beach access here is easy and convenient, the water quality here is refreshing and the wind is generally smooth as it’s often an ocean breeze here. There is a restaurant located right next to the kite beach, as well as parking and public restrooms. Being able to grab some hot food and a cold drink after your session is always a vibe.
Best Wind Directions for Kiteboarding Dunedin Causeway.
S, SW, W.
This location works best with a south, southwest and west wind. If the wind does go north or northwest, we recommend making the drive up north to Fred Howard park. If you have not visited yet, you are in for a treat. Check out our video linked in this blog.
Kiteboarding here is possible on a North but not recommended. There is limited space and powerlines.
South winds genraly occur more offten in the spring months and they can be some of the smoothest winds. If the wind is coming from the southwest there can be minor gusts from caladesi state park.
The riding area is large enough and the wind here has more than enough time to travel over unobstucted water to smooth out. Making this one of the nicest flat water locations for wind on the Gulf Coast.
This works will with the larger deep water areas too. You’ll have space for wingsurfing and hydrofoiling here.
What to expect when kitesurfing at Dunedin Causeway.
The launch area here is a small beach with a mix of sand and grass. The parking area is right next to the launch spot and a small resturant on the water. There is plenty of parking and a public restoom all within a stones throw. The grass is great for riging and tearing down gear to keep everything clean
The South side of the causeway is ideal for kiteboarding. You might be tempted to ride the north side but there are powerlines and it is not encouraged. There area near the beach is shallow and flat with marked boat channels. If you sail out closer to Honeymoon Island State Park Pet beach, you can find a couple large flat water spots with no kite crowds. .
Be mindful of boat trafic in the channels and keep a respectfull distance from the road. The bottom here is a mixture of sand and sea grass. There can be shells, rocks or oysters so booties are recommended. The largest deep water area is located west of the resturant. A little closer to the state park just west of the large flats.
This is where you will get the best wingsurfing and kitefoiling conditons. There is a boat channel not far from the launch that you could use to foil over to this spot.
What to avoid kiteboarding here.
Dunedin causeway is a beginner friendly kiteboarding location and there isn’t much to worry about here. The powerlines are the biggest hazard to avoid. The wind does blow over the roard here so we do recomend keeping a respectfull distance if you plan on trying lots of tricks where you might be crashing your kite. We are lucky to have so many shallow access spots near Tampa bay. If anything goes wrong, you can just flag your kite out, wrap up your lines and walk back in. Just be sure to wear booties.
- Beach goers. Give people the right of way.
- Don’t launch or land your kite near the powerlines on the north side.
- Watch out for boat traffic.
- Watch out for shells. Wear booties.
