What do I need to go kitesurfing?

Before diving into kiteboarding accessories, it’s essential to have your core gear in place. As a beginner, you’ll need the essentials: a kite (Shop Kites), board (Shop Kiteboards), bar, harness (Shop Harnesses), footstraps, and, most importantly, lessons (Book Kiteboarding Lessons). Do I need lessons to start kiteboarding? Yes, lessons are crucial for safely learning how to control the kite and board. Kiteboarding can be an extreme sport; proper instruction will keep you safe and help you progress fast while avoiding common mistakes and dangerous situations.

Once your core setup is complete and you’ve had professional guidance, you can consider additional gear. Some of this is optional, and some might be mandatory, depending on your location and situation.

Regardless, this list will help you get everything you need to kiteboard. A note on quivers: If you want to maximize your ride time, it's essential to have multiple kites to cover a range of wind conditions.

One kite will get you going but eventualy every kiter gets at least 3 to 4 kites. If you are new, consider an all-around kite like the Airush Lithium V13, known for its high-performance stability and ease of use in a wide range of conditions. What kiteboarding saftey gear do I need?

Kiteboarding saftey gear is an important part of your setup. If you want to be ready for anything you'll need more than just the standard kit. There are many styles of float vests, impact vests, kiteboarding helmets and more.

Do I Need an Impact or Flotation Vest for Kiteboarding?

Impact or flotation vests are not mandatory in all situations, but they offer several advantages.

Do I need a flotation vest for kiteboarding? If you are new, yes. Experienced riders may or may not use them, depending on circumstances. They help in deep water, of course, but if you’re riding in shallow waters or using a foil, they can provide extra safety.

Benefits of a saftey vest:

Warmth: An impact vest adds warmth, making longer sessions more comfortable on cooler days.

Protection: If you’re prone to crashes while trying new tricks, impact protection is a huge benefit. It goes without saying but of course extra flotation is a huge benefit.

Should I wear an impact vest while foiling? Absolutely—foiling comes with technical gear and a greater risk from falls, so a vest can prevent injuries and help you stay afloat after a wipeout.

If you are a new kitesurfer For added comfort and protection, we recommend checking out the AK Progression Vest, or explore the full range of Impact and Flotation Vests here.

Do I Need a Helmet for Kiteboarding?

Should I wear a helmet when kiteboarding? The decision to wear a helmet is a personal one, but it's highly recommended for beginners and foilers.

Protection: Helmets protect against head injuries during falls and are especially useful when riding in shallow water or near obstacles like rocks, docks, or reefs.

Do most kiteboarders wear helmets? While many experienced riders don’t wear helmets in deeper water with lower risks, a helmet can be a game-changer for those learning or riding in hazardous environments. They are essential if you are using a foil.

Helmets are standard practice for many sports, and we advocate you consider wearing one. Ultimately, wearing a helmet can offer peace of mind and prevent serious injury, making it worth considering for every level of rider, particularly when riding in risky conditions.

Do I Need a Wetsuit for Kiteboarding?

Wetsuits are essential in most kiteboarding locations. If you are in the USA you will need one at some point and likley sooner than later. If you live in the north, you will want one for summer. If you live in the south, you'll want a topper for summer and a fullsuit for winter.

Do I need a wetsuit for kiteboarding in warm weather? Yes! Even in warmer climates, water temperatures can drop, and a neoprene top or full wetsuit can provide insulation, protecting you from cold water and windchill.

Many riders also wear wetsuits when the air temperature is warm, but the water is cooler or simply for the buoyancy and sun protection they offer. In places like the USA, you’ll likely need a wetsuit at some point during the year, even if it’s just a thinner layer for added warmth.

Do I Need Gloves, Booties, and a Hood for Kiteboarding?

Cold weather and rough conditions may require more than just a wetsuit.

Do I need booties for kiteboarding? In some locations, yes. For example, in St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay, booties are essential due to the large number of shells in the water. Even when it’s warm, riders in these areas wear booties to protect their feet from cuts. They are essential when the water is cold in the winter months.

Should I use gloves and a hood for kiteboarding? Gloves provide additional warmth and grip in cold weather, while a hood helps to retain body heat when the water is particularly cold. If you’re riding in colder conditions, having these accessories can make your sessions much more comfortable.

For complete protection and comfort, we recommend checking out the selection of gloves, booties, and hoods.

Do I Need Lightwind Gear for Kiteboarding?

Lightwind gear can extend your riding days significantly, especially if you're kiteboarding in places like Florida, where summer conditions often bring lighter winds.

Should I invest in lightwind gear as a beginner? Absolutely. A 17m kite paired with a lightwind board allows beginners to ride more frequently, even in lighter wind conditions.

Lightwind gear is specifically designed to maximize your kite’s power, ensuring you can still get on the water when others may struggle.

Do I need a hydrofoil for kiteboarding?

In Florida, the summer months bring lower wind speeds, making it essential to have the right setup for those lightwind days.

Should I switch to kitefoiling for light wind conditions? Yes, transitioning to kitefoiling is a smart move once you have experience. Kitefoils are much more efficient in light winds, allowing you to ride in conditions that would be unworkable with a traditional setup.

With a hydrofoil, even winds as low as 8-10 knots can be enough to get you riding. Kitefoiling opens up a whole new world of lightwind riding, letting you make the most of lower wind days.
