How to launch at Viento State Park

Launch Tips:

Viento’s launch area is rocky and can be tricky to navigate, so preparation is key.

Safety First: Be mindful of your surroundings, including rocky terrain and nearby seaweed. It gets thick near the shore just downwind of the launch.

Barge Lane: Always check for other river traffic, including barges and recreational vessels. The north side of the river is a barge lane and they will not stop.

Getting Past the Wind Shadow: Start your session by moving beyond the wind shadow near the shore to access the open breeze.

Equipment Prep: Make sure your gear is in top shape. This location is ideal for wingsufing, SUP foils, downwind wings, and other watersports beyond kitesurfing.

Downwinders at Viento State Park

Why Viento is the Premier Downwind Spot:

Unbeatable Winds: The Gorge is famous for its consistent winds, and Viento is no exception. West winds make this location particularly favorable for downwind runs. They will take you right to the event site sandbar!

Water sport heaven:  From foiling to outrigger canoes, Viento attracts a wide range of water sports enthusiasts, making it a hub of activity and expertise.

Community Vibes:  The park is a gathering spot for elite watermen and women, creating a welcoming environment for newcomers and veterans alike.

Onshore Winds:
East winds can be enjoyable for more advanced riders. However, the beach's smaller size means onshore winds can create challenging conditions. The wind does get gusty if it clocks over the hills at all.

Beginner and intermediate riders may find the conditions manageable on days with smaller waves and lighter east winds. The key is to ensure you can ride upwind even when the current reduces some of the wind's power.

Safety Considerations:

While Viento offers incredible conditions, it’s important to stay aware of typical Columbia River Gorge hazards.

River Traffic: The Gorge is a working waterway, so watch for barges and other large vessels. Always give them the right of way.

Changing Conditions:  The wind can shift unexpectedly—check the forecast before heading out and be prepared to adapt.

Buddy System: Downwinding is best enjoyed with friends. Stay close to your group and ensure everyone is accounted for. A solo trip is not recommmended or smart.
