Skyway Beach St Petersburg Florida – Best Beginner kite beach in Florida
Skyway is our top choice for beginner kitesurfers. It’s so good, we set up a kiteboarding school here. Skyway Beach boasts the largest kiteboarding community in the state. The water here is protected by a large sandbar and it’s about knee to waist deep. This means you can expect safe and easy conditions for riding. If something goes wrong, you can always walk back to the beach.
The water here is relatively flat depending on the tide and perfect for kiteboarders of all levels. The biggest reason we rank St Pete high on our list is the consistency of wind and the fact that you can ride any wind direction here. If you are visiting the state, this will be your best bet to catch lots of kiteboarding sessions. You will meet some of the friendliest people here and meet riders of all levels. From rank beginners to some impressively good kiters putting on a show.
Lassing Park is best on an east wind. When it lines up, be sure to visit this gem.
Fort Desoto East Beach St Petersburg
Fort Desoto is beautiful. The water here is some of the smoothest on the west coast of Florida. Like Skyway, it’s protected by a large sandbar. The water is knee to waist deep and easy to walk out of with a pair of booties. You’ll find easy parking and beach access. It is paid parking but well worth it.
Fort Desoto also offers camping so its ideal for anyone traveling on a Florida kiteboarding vacation. We do recommend booking in advance as sites fill up fast. The good news is like the rest of St Pete, you do have a great chance to catch some wind during the winter months.
Fred Howard Park – Best Flatwater spot in West Central Florida.
Fred Howard Park is like something out of a kitesurfers dream. Imagine a large road leading to a small island covered in palm trees. The road creates a perfect kiteboarding slick on north and south winds. There are two beaches designated for kiteboarding and wingsurfing here.
The water here is not as shallow as other St Petersburg locations. You can stand up downwind of the road, but it drops off fast. This is our top recommended locations for kiteboarders looking for flat water
Cocoa beach 520 Slick the most famous kiteboarding spot in Florida.
This is one of the most famous kiteboarding locations in Florida. It’s known for its flat water and has been featured in many pro kiteboarding edits. Parking here is easy; the launch is a little more work. Kiteboarders will pump up their kites upwind of the mangroves. There are two opening where you will walk thought and drift launch your kite.
The water here is shallow until you reach the boat channel downwind. Then it becomes shallow again for the most part with various depths. Most kiters stay upwind of the channel to catch the perfect flat water. You will find the smoothest wind just past the mangroves where there is a wide opening.
You can catch strong updrafts off the mangroves for big air or keep your distance for beginner friendly conditions. There are several kiteboarding schools here and a vibrant community of friendly welcoming kiteboarders.
Jetty Park through Satellite beach. – Best Wave kiteboarding spots.
This is one of many incredible wave kitesurfing locations along the coast. Most beach access points down to Satellite beach have incredible waves. Jetty Park has flat hard pack sand and beginner friendly waves. North winds here wind needs to have more east in them to be smooth. Wind here is mostly north in the prime season, so we recommend driving further south for cleaner wind.
The beaches to get smaller near Satellite beach. Always give beach goers, fishermen and surfers the right of way. Chances are if there is wind, you’ll have the beach to yourself. You can do some exploring as well. Most of the central and north east coast of Florida has amazing waves.
Jupiter Florida - Carlin Park.
Jupiter is an incredible slide of Paradise. Here you will find blue waters, waves and lush scenic beaches. Carlin Park offers easy parking, grills, restrooms and a large beach access. This is a popular spot for beach goes as well.
Be mindful that Carlin Park can get crowded on light wind days. Shower 56 is just down the road from Carlin Park. It has become a popular spot for locals to kite. Park along the road and set up here to avoid the crowds.
The kiteboarding in Jupiter is all ocean based so there can be choppy water, a shore break and waves. It offers conditions for all levels but there will be days where the waves might be too big for beginner kiteboarders. The water is deep and there can be ocean currents here.
For wave riders, big air kiters and experienced freerides, you won’t find a more beautiful beach or town to visit. The waves here are on par with Cocoa Beach.
The Florida Keys - Islamorada Anne's Beach
There are several amazing kiteboarding locations in the Florida Keys. Annes beach in Islamorada has turquoise shallow waters. The beach here is very small.
There is room for one or two kiters to set up at a time and drift launch their kites. You will find shallow waters here and smooth winds. This is the easiest access point for kiteboarding and my favorite beach in this part of the keys. The town is amazing for tourist and a perfect destination holiday. Make sure you visit the florida keys brewing co and get an iguana bait.
You can Find Parking right next to the kite beach or accros the street in the overflow lot. The wind shadow on the beach makes landing easy but use cation. If there are people on the beach, you will have to self rescue and walk back in. There is no room for error here.
Always respect beach goers, keep your kites stacked together and wrap up your lines when not in use. Riding here is a privlage so lets keep it that way.

The Florida Keys - Marathon Curry Hammock
Curry Hammock is our favorite beach in the upper keys. You can find camping here. A large grass staging area and the same shallow flat water. Parking here can be limited so you do want to arrive early on a good day. It’s common to have to turn around at the gate when the wind is twenty knots and up.
There are a few rules to abide by here. Only launch in the designated area. Do not ride within 300 feet of shore. Never fly your kite over the campground.
The launch area here is grass and one of the easiest for kiteboarding in the keys. There is a large sandbar to the east of the kite launch area. Here you will find endless flat water and often have it completely to yourself. As the parking is limited here, you’ll never see too many kiters on the water.
There is a campgroud here. If you want the ultimate kiteboarding vacation, make sure you book months in advance. It can be a challange to get a spot.
Key West - Smathers Beach and Higs Beach
Key West is almost a new country. If you are looking for island life and an escape from USA within our boarders, this is the place. Smathers beach is a popular spot with a small rock jetty. You can find shallow flat water here.
Be mindful that this is a popular tourist location and a small beach area. Always give people the right of way and be respectful. Watch out for the powerlines along the road.
Higgs Beach has the white St Pier. This is the flattest water in all the Florida Keys. The beach has white sugar sand and offers ample room to set up a kite. The entry into the water is a little challenging.
You do have to walk down some slippery stairs into the water here. We don’t recommend this locations for beginners. If you are a competent rider, you will fall in love and may never want to leave.
