A Guide to Kitesurfing Sebastian Inlet.
Everything you need to know kiteboarding here.
Kiteboarding Sebastian Inlet, Florida.
Monster Hole at Sebastian Inlet is one of Florida's most famous (and infamous) surf spots, known for its powerful waves, strong currents, and the prime waves it offers to advanced kiteboarders and surfers alike. This is one of the best breaks in Florida but It’s also the most Sharkey and busy beaches.
While it's an epic location for kitesurfing, this spot is primarily a surf break, so it's crucial for kiteboarders to give surfers the right of way on the waves. This spot requires respect for both the ocean and the surf community that has been riding here for decades. For the advanced rider, this spot can be incredible, but it’s not the most beginner-friendly guide. Check out our kitesurfing travel guide to learn about more beginner-friendly locations.

Why Sebastian Inlet, Florida, is great for kitesurfing.
South of Melbourne beach you’ll find Sebastian intlet lovingly called monster hole by the locals.
This is a state park and there is a $5.00 parking fee.
Monster Hole is a sandbar break located on the southside of Sebastian Inlet. It’s famous for generating long, glassy waves when the conditions align—ideal for wave-riding on a surfboard or kitesurfboard. If you are into wave riding and can handle larger waves, you will love riding here.
There are campsites available for long weekends or kiters on vacation looking for an adventure. The waves are so good that there are a few surf competitions held here yearly.
You’ll love this location for the conditions but only if you are an advanced wave rider.
Warning: We don’t recommend riding here for beginners or even low-level intermediate riders. The currents can be strong, there is lots of wildlife in the water, and this is primarily a surf break where you must respect the rules of navigation in a wave lineup and give surfers the right of way at all times.
Experts only: If you are an expert and can handle yourself in large waves you’ll love it here.
Best Wind Directions for Kiteboarding Playa Linda Beach, Florida
NNW, N, NE, SE, SSE
North is the main wind direction for Florida in the winter months. You will note that expert wave riders might be right with a slight side-off breeze. This means the waves will be cleaner, but it can be hazardous for a kiter. The safest wind directions here will be side and side on winds. The waves will be choppier, but there will be fewer surfers in the water, and it will be safer for kiteboarding.
Onshore waves can also be a vibe for kiteboarding as you will be tacking back and forth at the same break. Side off: We don’t recommend you ride side off winds as there will be more surfers out and you could get pulled out to sea. Offshore winds: Do not attempt to ride offshore here.
What to expect when kitesurfing at Sebastian Inlet, FL
Like most east coast Florida kitesurfing spots, you can take the A1A to get this state park. There are amenities here, including pavilions and camping. Monster Hole is not a spot for beginners. The currents here are strong, the waves are powerful, and the chance of encountering sharks adds an extra layer of difficulty. The swells range from manageable to massive, and depending on the tides and wind, the sandbar creates a variety of wave shapes—sometimes fast and hollow, other times long and rolling.
Why Playa Linda is Great for Kitesurfing
When conditions are right, the waves can peel for hundreds of yards, offering a dream ride for kiteboarders who love wave-riding. You’ll also enjoy the remoteness of this spot, as it’s far enough offshore to avoid most beachgoers. That said, always remember that this is a known surf spot, and surfers here expect respect from kiters. If you’re into kite foiling, the deep waters make it possible to foil even when the wind is light, but be mindful of the surfers who are typically more focused on the big swells.
Consistent Waves: Thanks to its sandbar formations, Sebastian Inlet consistently offers great waves for both surfers and kiteboarders.
What to be aware of kitesurfing Sebastian Inlet, FL
Sharks: Monster Hole is known for being a "sharky" spot, so always be aware of your surroundings and avoid kiting during dusk or dawn when sharks are most active.
Rip Currents: The currents here are strong, especially near the inlet, so advanced navigation skills are crucial to stay safe.
Crowds: This is a well-known surf spot, so respect for surfers is paramount. Always give the right of way and avoid getting in the lineup when it’s busy.
