Short vs Long eFoil Mast: Which Waydoo Setup Is Best for Tampa Bay?
If you are choosing a Waydoo eFoil mast, the short answer is simple: beginners and shallow-water riders usually want the 27-inch mast, while stronger riders in chop, waves, or open Tampa Bay conditions usually want the 35-inch mast.
That is the easy version.
The real answer depends on where you ride, how comfortable you are on foil, and how much room you have under the board. In St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay, mast length matters because we deal with shallow flats, boat chop, wind texture, sandbars, and open-water sections that can change fast.
In this video, Aaron from Elite Watersports breaks down the Waydoo mast options and explains when a shorter mast makes riding easier, when a longer mast gives you better performance, and why the right setup is not always the “most advanced” setup.
What will you learn in this Waydoo mast video?
You will see how Aaron chooses between the main Waydoo eFoil mast options for real riding around St. Pete and Tampa Bay.
This video covers:
-
Why the 27-inch mast is usually better for beginners
-
Why the 35-inch mast feels better in chop, waves, and open water
-
Where the 31-inch carbon mast fits in
- Why shallow lakes, sandbars, and bay riding can change the right choice
- How Waydoo geofencing can help in shallow-water zones
- Why performance riders usually prefer a longer mast
If you are buying your first eFoil, booking an eFoil lesson in St. Petersburg, or trying to set up a Waydoo for Tampa Bay conditions, this is one of those decisions that is worth getting right before you ride.
Should beginners use a short eFoil mast?
Yes. Most beginners are better off starting on a short eFoil mast because it keeps you closer to the water and makes height control easier.
Aaron says the 27-inch mast is what Elite Watersports typically uses on school boards. That matters. Lesson boards need to work for real first-time riders, not just people who already know how to foil.
When you are new, the hardest part is not speed. It is controlling how high the board lifts. A shorter mast gives you less height to manage. You are not way up in the air. You can feel the board rise, correct earlier, and stay calmer when the foil starts lifting.
In Tampa Bay, that helps a lot. New riders are often learning in water that has some wind texture, boat wakes, or small chop. A short mast keeps the whole experience more manageable.
It also makes the gear feel smaller. Carrying it, launching it, and getting comfortable around the foil feels less intimidating.
If you are the rider saying, “I just want to get up and not feel like I’m launching into space,” the 27-inch mast is probably the better starting point.

Is a long eFoil mast better for choppy water?
Yes. A longer eFoil mast is usually better in choppy water because it gives the foil more room to stay underwater while the board rides above the surface.
This is where the 35-inch mast starts to make sense.
In St. Pete and Tampa Bay, glassy water is amazing, but it is not the whole story. The wind can turn on. Boat traffic can stack up. The bay can get bumpy. Once you are riding faster or carving harder, a longer mast gives you more range before the wings get too close to the surface.
That means fewer accidental touchdowns. It also means you can ride through chop with more confidence because the foil has room to work underneath you.
Aaron’s take is clear: if you are pushing the limits, riding waves, making aggressive turns, or wanting better ride quality, the longer mast is the better tool.
The 35-inch mast is not just about being advanced. It is about having more room to ride when the water is moving.

What is the difference between a 27-inch and 35-inch Waydoo mast?
The 27-inch Waydoo mast is easier, more manageable, and better for beginners or shallow water. The 35-inch Waydoo mast gives you more performance, more clearance, and better control in chop or waves.
Think of it like this:
|
Waydoo mast |
Best for |
Main benefit |
|
27-inch mast |
Beginners, lessons, shallow water |
Easier height control |
|
35-inch mast |
Intermediate to advanced riders |
Better in chop and waves |
|
31-inch carbon mast |
Performance riders wanting lighter gear |
Carbon upgrade feel |
The short mast makes the learning curve smoother. The long mast gives you room to ride harder.
Neither one is “better” for everyone. The better mast is the one that matches your water and your riding.
A beginner learning behind the Skyway area, in protected water, or on a shallow lake does not need the same setup as a rider carving through afternoon chop off St. Pete Beach.
Should I use a short mast in shallow water?
Yes. If your riding area is shallow, a short mast can be the smarter choice.
Aaron gives a real shop example in the video. A customer was worried about riding on a lake that started shallow and stayed around 5 to 10 feet deep. In that case, the longer mast created more concern about hitting bottom, so the shorter mast made more sense.
That same thinking applies around Tampa Bay.
We have shallow areas, sandbars, grass flats, and zones where the depth changes quickly. You still need enough water to ride safely, but a shorter mast gives you more margin than a longer one.
Waydoo also has geofencing features that can help riders outline zones where they should not go. Aaron mentions that the board can reduce speed and stop before entering those areas. That is helpful, but it does not replace smart local knowledge.
If you are not sure where the safe eFoil zones are around St. Pete, ask the shop before you ride. Better yet, take a lesson and learn where the water gives you enough room.
Is the 31-inch carbon Waydoo mast worth it?
The 31-inch carbon mast is a performance upgrade for riders who want a lighter, more refined feel under the board.
Aaron says he enjoys the carbon upgrade, but he also makes it clear that the 35-inch aluminum mast is just fine. That is important. You do not have to buy the fanciest mast to have a great ride.
The carbon mast makes sense if you already know you care about feel, weight, and performance. If you are still learning, the 27-inch mast is usually the smarter choice. If you are riding harder and want more clearance, the 35-inch aluminum mast already gets the job done.
The 31-inch carbon option sits in the middle. It gives you a performance feel without going all the way to the longest mast length.
For most first-time buyers, I would not start with the carbon mast unless the rest of your setup and riding goals justify it.
What eFoil mast should I choose for Tampa Bay?

For Tampa Bay, choose your mast based on your riding level and where you actually ride.
If you are a beginner, start with the 27-inch mast. It is easier to control, easier to learn on, and better for shallow-water scenarios.
If you are already comfortable on foil and want to ride in chop, waves, or open water, the 35-inch mast gives you more room and better performance.
If you want a lighter performance setup and like the feel of carbon, look at the 31-inch carbon mast.
Here is the simple version, choose the 27-inch mast if:
✔ You are new to eFoiling
✔ You are taking lessons
✔ You ride shallow lakes or bay areas
✔ You want the easiest setup to manage
✔ You care more about control than performance
Choose the 35-inch mast if:
✔ You already ride confidently
✔ You want to carve harder
✔ You ride in chop or waves
✔ You want better clearance
✔ You are pushing the board more aggressively
Choose the 31-inch carbon mast if:
✔ You want a lighter premium feel
✔ You already know how to ride
✔ You want a performance upgrade
✔ You do not necessarily need the full 35-inch length

Choosing the right Waydoo mast for Tampa Bay and St. Pete
Hey everyone, Aaron here with Elite Watersports. This video is all about choosing the right mast from Waydoo for our St. Pete and Tampa Bay waters.
The real question is short versus long.
When we’re getting into the different lengths of mast, you’re going to have a couple different performance differences, and also whether it’s for beginner or advanced. We’re also going to talk about different scenarios toward the end of the video.
Waydoo mast length options
The first thing I like to say is the lengths are 27 and 35 inches. They even have an Elite carbon mast at 31 inches.
Why would you select a longer mast?
The longer mast is going to be a lot easier in choppy conditions and much better for the ride quality and performance side for those guys that are pushing the limits, riding waves, or going out into more aggressive turns. Their style of riding needs that longer length to keep the wings in the water.
Why beginners usually use the 27-inch mast
When we go into the 27, the 27 is what we typically use for all of our school boards.
We have that shorter mast to make it a little bit easier so you’re not so high off the water, and so you can regulate that height a little bit easier.
Let’s not forget that the Plus model boards, matched up with whatever mast you choose, will actually regulate and self-maintain the height that you want to ride at.
Shallow water scenarios
When it comes to application, scenario-based, we had a customer in the shop the other day that was worried about his lake.
His lake was very shallow to start with, and then it kind of remains around 5 to 10 feet throughout the whole entire lake. He was worried about the longer mast actually hitting the bottom more frequently.
Although Waydoo has geofencing, so you can outline where people shouldn’t go and it will actually reduce the speed and stop before you enter those zones, the shorter mast was better for his application. That’s why he went with that.
Advanced rider setup
For me, as the more performance-oriented rider, 35 all the way.
I really do enjoy the upgrade to have carbon fiber underneath me at 31 inches, but the 35 aluminum is just fine. I can go out and do whatever I need to do for the day, either at waves or just flat water freeride.
I can even give it to my kids and my wife to go rip on it any day.
Final mast recommendation
Where it really comes down to it is a shorter mast, by far, is just going to be more manageable for beginners, shallow water conditions, and just to make it an easier, smaller footprint of the gear that you have.
When you get into the longer mast, it’s going to be for the awesome rider to go push the limits.

FAQ: Short vs Long Waydoo eFoil Mast
What is the best Waydoo mast for beginners?
The best Waydoo mast for most beginners is the 27-inch mast. It keeps you closer to the water, makes height control easier, and gives you a more manageable setup while learning.
Is a 35-inch eFoil mast harder to learn on?
Yes, it can be harder for a beginner because you are riding higher above the water and have more height to manage. Once you are comfortable, the 35-inch mast gives better performance in chop and waves.
Can I ride a long eFoil mast in Tampa Bay?
Yes, but you need to pay attention to water depth, sandbars, and shallow zones. Tampa Bay has plenty of places where a long mast works well, but it also has areas where a shorter mast is safer and easier.
Why do eFoil schools use short masts?
Schools often use short masts because they make the first sessions easier. Riders are closer to the water, height control is simpler, and the board feels less intimidating.
Is the carbon Waydoo mast better than aluminum?
The carbon mast is a premium performance upgrade. It can feel lighter and more refined, but the aluminum mast still works great. Most riders should choose mast length first, then decide if carbon is worth the upgrade.
Should I ask the shop before choosing my mast?
Yes. Mast choice depends on your riding level, local water depth, weight, board setup, and goals. Elite Watersports can help you choose the right Waydoo mast for St. Pete, Tampa Bay, or wherever you plan to ride.
Summary: which Waydoo mast should you buy?
If you are new, learning, or riding shallow water, go with the 27-inch Waydoo mast.
If you are confident on foil, riding chop, carving harder, or heading into more open Tampa Bay conditions, go with the 35-inch Waydoo mast.
If you want a lighter premium feel and already know what kind of performance you want, look at the 31-inch carbon mast.
The main thing is this: do not buy the mast that sounds the most advanced. Buy the mast that matches your water and your riding.
