A Guide to Kitesurfing Lassing Park St Petersburg Florida
Kitesurfing is one of the fastest-growing sports in Florida. St Petersburg is one of the best cities for kiteboarding in central Florida. We have so many kiteboarding spots with world-class conditions. Best of all, we can kite in any wind direction. One spot in particular stands out for several reasons. South of downtown St Petersburg is one of the best kiteboarding locations in Tampa Bay.
Lassing Park in Southern Pinellas boasts a luxurious grassy launch area and perfect conditions for kitesurfers of all levels. At Elite Watersports, we like to call this place the country club. It’s easy to see why. It is nestled in a beautiful neighborhood and protected by a large sandbar. The views here are incredible, and on the right wind direction, it has the best kitesurfing conditions in St Petersburg.
Best Wind Directions for Kiteboarding Lassing Park.
E, NE, SE
East, North East, and South East winds work here. East winds are the smoothest and the strongest. South East and North East winds can be gusty or light. We recommend riding Skyway Beach in these wind directions. Or you could check out East Beach Fort De Soto. Skyway Beach is closer to Lassing Park and popular with the local kite schools and kiteboarders. East Beach Fort Desoto is a longer drive but can offer similar flat water to Lassing Park. The current and the tide impact these locations less.
Where to park.
There is plenty of parking along the road here. You can park right on Beach Drive SE. Lassing is a park next to a neighborhood. Always be considerate of the homeowners.
Where to set up your kites.
The setup and launch area here is spacious and forgiving. It’s the only beach where you won’t have to worry about getting your kite sandy when setting up and tearing down. Don’t set up or fly kites near the road. Same for when you are riding. Don’t ride too close to the shore or the homes on the water. There is plenty of space here but be mindful of the areas with trees.
What to expect when kiteboarding at Lassing Park.
The kiteboarding conditions here are perfect for twintip riding. The average water depth is knee to waist deep. Lassing Park might have the flattest water in Tampa Bay on an east wind. The Sandbar is quite large and keeps the chop to a minimum. It’s perfect for learning new kiteboarding tricks, big air kiters, or freestyle riders looking for a place to progress.
The bottom is a combination of seagrass and sand. There are random shells, so booties are a good idea. Make sure to check the tides before coming out. Low tide can be too shallow to kitesurf. In that event, Skyway Beach East is where you’ll want to kite.
Downwinders from Lassing Park to Skyway are popular and something you should try when it lines up. From time to time, we organize downwinders with the crew here. Check out our events page to get in on the fun.
Where to wind-wing or windsurf at Lassing Park
The lagoon-like conditions here are not the only attraction. The water outside the sandbar is deep enough for foils. You will have to walk out a way to get there, but it’s well worth it. The rolling waves can be incredible for wing surfing or just cruising around. Wing downwinders to Skyway Beach are also a popular activity.
