Tampa Bay - Skyway Bridge Kiteboarding Spots

The Skyway bridge has a lot to offer. All wind directions, Flat water for miles and deep water for foiling. This hot spot for the Tampa Bay area attracts all level of riders. Some of the best in Tampa Bay will be there to greet you on the beach. Accompanied by the general public you may find a large variety of demographic on the weekends unless it blowing heavy which natural hinder most "non kiters" from the beach. Please check in with the Elite Watersports van for local regulations and safety precautions.

Skyway North East

Best wind direction is north east but it will work for north, east and south wind. The straight north and south winds are a bit gusty and many kiteboarders may chose other kiteboarding locations in the Tampa Bay area. This location attacks many different disciplines within kiteboarding. Flat water sand bars offer smooth condition with any amount of wind. Where the very deep water that surrounds these sand bars offer great foiling and strapless.  Parking is easy with hard packed sand that most cars can drive on. Watch out for super high tides that come a couple times of year where the parking turns to water. Beginners are very welcome but you must know the sand bar layout. Only travel out to deeper water if you are comfortable with a possible self rescue.

Skyway West Side "Backside"

Best wind direction is south west to north west. It will work if any wind has a westerly component. The more south or the more north the wind goes the more gusty it becomes.  Backside skyway nay not be the largest launch in Tampa Bay but it does offer a huge playground of flat water. With all locations you must understand your limitations. Deep water channels surround this location. There is a small island about 100' in diameter directly out from the launch with oyster bars surrounding it. Do not venture out around this. High tide conceals the live shells that are razor sharp. You'll see a boat channel that runs north and south. Treat this like a busy highway with boat traffic. Look both ways and do not cross if there are boats with a half mile from you. It is possible to foil here just to the north of the launch. It is hard to navigate the waters unless a local can be there to point out obstacles.

Skyway South "Guard Rails"

Wind Direction is North East only and must be strong. This location is not very popular. You may find that you are the only one here. It's not for beginners. Hence the name. You'll park to the south of the rest area near a pavilion. If the tide is anything but low you'll have to rig in the grass, roll your lines and do a self launch out on the sand flats. If the tide is low then the sand bars are exposed. This location is typically alway onshore but offers a back water lagoon east of the launch. Do not go west towards the highway where there is deep water, the bridge and strong currents. You have been warned. Adventure here when other spots may be crowded. No support and no rescues in sight.
